Innovation in healthcare isn’t always about new technology. Sometimes it’s about finding better ways to reach people before a health concern becomes a crisis. At Kennedy Community Health, our Problem Gambling Prevention Program reflects this year’s National Health Center Week theme, Innovating for Healthier Communities, by focusing on education, outreach, and early intervention.
As gambling has become more accessible through casinos, sports betting, and online platforms, the need for prevention has grown. Many people don’t recognize the warning signs of problem gambling until it has already affected their finances, relationships, or mental health. Others may not know where to turn for support or may be hesitant to ask for help because of the stigma surrounding gambling addiction. Our program was created to address those challenges by bringing education and resources directly into the community.
Instead of waiting for someone to seek treatment, the program focuses on prevention. Through community outreach, educational presentations, and partnerships with local organizations, we help people better understand the risks associated with gambling, recognize the signs of a developing problem, and learn where support is available. By meeting people where they are, we’re able to reach individuals who may never have these conversations in a traditional healthcare setting.
What makes this approach effective is its focus on community engagement. By working alongside schools, local organizations, and community events throughout Central Massachusetts, we’re making conversations about problem gambling more accessible while helping reduce the stigma that often prevents people from asking for help. Treating gambling disorder as a public health issue encourages earlier intervention and helps individuals and families access support before the impacts become more severe.
The program has continued to grow its impact across the region. In 2025 alone, Kennedy Community Health’s Problem Gambling Prevention Program connected with more than 10,000 individuals through 190 outreach events held both at our health centers and throughout the community. Every event provides an opportunity to educate, raise awareness, and connect someone with resources that could make a meaningful difference.
By focusing on prevention, strengthening community partnerships, and bringing education beyond the walls of the health center, Kennedy Community Health is helping create healthier communities through innovation, one conversation at a time.
